For many families in Atebubu, getting water each day means a trip to an open pond. The same water is used for drinking, cooking and washing, and it can carry waterborne diseases that put families, especially children, at risk.
In 2022, Global Foundation for Community Development LBG (GFfCD) began working with the Atebubu community to change that.

Listening before acting
We didn’t arrive with a ready-made plan. Instead, we held consultations with traditional leaders, opinion leaders, civil society organisations and community members to understand their water challenges and hear what they needed.
These conversations gave residents a direct voice in shaping the solution, because projects built with communities last longer than projects built for them.

The solution the community chose
Together, we identified a solar-powered mechanised borehole as the most sustainable way forward. It is designed to:
- Provide safe, reliable and affordable drinking water
- Reduce dependence on the open pond and the health risks it brings
- Run on solar energy, keeping operating costs low so the facility lasts
Advancing SDG 6
This project supports SDG Target 6.1: universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030. It reflects our commitment to community-led development and to making sure no community is left behind.
Help us build it
The community has chosen its solution. Now we need partners to help make it a reality. Organisations, donors and individuals can support the construction of the Atebubu borehole.
