Good sanitation is the foundation of healthy communities. In parts of Ghana’s coastal Western Region, open defecation still affects public health, beaches and the coastal environment.
GFfCD has engaged coastal communities, including Aboadze, Shama and other participating communities, through community empowerment and sanitation education.
Communities leading the change
Our approach starts with listening. We bring community members, local stakeholders and development organisations together to explore how they can work as one to:
- Address open defecation
- Improve sanitation and hygiene practices
- Keep beaches and coastal environments clean
- Protect coastal communities and their livelihoods
The goal is to strengthen community awareness, participation and ownership, so that change lasts long after any single activity ends.
Part of a bigger picture
This work contributes to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). It reflects what we believe: communities are not beneficiaries of change, they are partners in creating it.
